So yesterday, I was really frustrated after practice;
My team only gets the gym to workout twice a week. Each working lasts 90 minutes, so our players only have 3 hours of team workout per week over the summer.
DEFINITELY NOT ENOUGH
So I’ve made sure to show our guys drills they can do in their own time to improve their handles, shot, strength… And I also made sure to tell them to work on their game outside of our team workouts. I even invited some of them to come to my private group workouts.
…But every time we get back to the gym, it shows they haven’t worked on their game at all.
Shooting form is still messed up, basic footwork is not used… THEY DON’T WORK ON THEIR GAME EVERYDAY AND THINK JUST SHOWING UP TO 2 WORKOUTS WILL BE ENOUGH.
So after our workout yesterday, I said:
– It’s sunny during the summer. All you guys need is to go to the parks outside and work on the drills I gave you.
– But I don’t have a ball (That’s what one of the guys told me)
The kids all had expensive sneakers on their feet, brand name clothes, and they still tried to tell me they can’t afford to buy a $12 ball!!!
Truth is this, if you don’t own a ball, maybe you don’t love basketball.
Real lovers of the game have a ball, and workout on their game all the time; during workouts, before, after, watch games… They eat, drink, think, and sleep basketball.
That’s why they eventually become good at it! Obsession.
If your coach or your dad loves the game more than you do, you’re not an elite player.
