I used to love the off-season as a player; it was the time of the year where I was able to dedicate my time to improving my body and my skills. One summer, I went back home to work out with a friend of mine who told me he had a fantastic tool that was gonna help us improve quickly. I did improve really quickly, and this was probably the best off-season work out I’ve ever had.

 

My friend and I went to the gym every night from 7pm to 11pm to work on our game. I remember the first day. I knocked at my friend’s door to pick him up. He was wearing this jacket that looked like a bullet proof vest. I thought he was crazy. He said “Keep laughing at me, we’ll see what’s up when we get on the court!”

And we did see what’s up that day! Before we started doing our agility drill, my friend put the vest on me. I quickly realized, there was extra weight on it. Then I started doing shuffles on the ladder, up and down the stairs, and then – and it killed me! – burpees. We did this every other day for 2 months.

I quickly realized that my legs had gotten a lot stronger and then I was a lot more explosive. I wish I had brought back the vest to the States with me!

Warning

  • You shouldn’t play basketball with the vest – It can hurt your articulations if you’re not careful
  • Shooting with the vest is pretty hard because of the weight on your shoulder – can alter your shooting form.
